Welcome to this third edition of Trenchless Australasia. It is pleasing to hear of the enthusiastic response to our official magazine, and to see that the already high standard of publication that we saw in the first two editions has been surpassed in this edition.

Harker Construction rise to the challenge of Wellington contract

Harker Underground Construction was established in 1986 with a focus on pipe jacking, after an initial focus on general contracting work. From the outset the company used hand techniques to install short lines, typically under railways and main roads, although in 1998 Harker began to use mechanical means to install lines. Harker provided Trenchless Australasia with this update on their operations, focusing on a recent contract they were awarded from the Wellington City Council in New Zealand.

As a result of a number of spills in the 1960s, contamination has leached through the predominantly sandy ground of a number of sites owned by Orica in Botany Bay, reaching the water table up to 20 m below the surface. As a result of tidal and ground water movement, a plume is making its way toward the open water of Botany Bay. To clean up and stop the plume reaching Botany Bay, Orica called on UEA.
