Welcome to this third edition of Trenchless Australasia. It is pleasing to hear of the enthusiastic response to our official magazine, and to see that the already high standard of publication that we saw in the first two editions has been surpassed in this edition.

Secretary’s Corner

Promotion of the 24th International NO-DIG 2006 Conference and Exhibition received a boost in May with the Conference flyer being distributed at the Australian Water Association’s Ozwater Conference.

OzWater Conference

The ASTT took a stand at the recent OzWater exhibition in the Brisbane Convention Centre, organised by the Australian Water Association.

enviroNZ 05: Auckland, Sep 28-30

Planning for enviroNZ05, to be held from September 28 to 30 at the Aotea Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, is now well underway.

Trenchless Egypt 2005

Trenchless Egypt 2005 is being held at the Cairo International Exhibition and Conference Centre in Cairo, 14-16 November this year.

Robbins appoints new MD

The Robbins Company, manufacturers of underground excavation equipment including tunnel boring machines and a wide range of trenchless utilities, has appointed Geoff Brewster as Managing Director of their Australian subsidiary, Robbins Asia Pacific.

Technologies for sewer rehabilitation in Malaysia

This report outlines the key findings of the study, focusing on the applicable sewer rehabilitation techniques which use Trenchless Technology.

Otway Gas Project - Microtunnelling retraction project

For the first time in the Southern Hemisphere, a microtunnelling retraction method was undertaken at the Otway Gas Project. These works were the first step in the overall success of future gas supplies for mainland Australia.

Recent successful projects, including the shore crossing for the 42 inch North West Shelf second trunkline offshore Western Australia and the 20 inch Otway gas export pipeline at Port Campbell in Victoria have strengthened the position of Atteris as a specialist in the field of pipeline engineering and construction management.

Humes launch new jacking pipes

Humes recently launched the new ‘S’ series and ‘J’ series steel reinforced concrete jacking pipes. The new concrete jacking pipes have been developed with cast-in steel band joints based on technology proven over many years of trenchless pipe installation projects in Asia, with some improvements to meet Australian customer requirements.

Microtunnelling - an environmentally friendly trenchless solution

Trenchless Technologies such as microtunnelling are undoubtedly the most environmentally friendly method of installing pipelines, requiring the least disruption to the natural environment. In the past, pipeline installation has seen a compromise between balancing the cost to the environment with the cost of construction but now, Bullseye Microtunnelling believe they have the technology that allows for environmentally sound pipeline installations at a competitive price.

Multiple installs conduit for CitiPower in Melbourne

CitiPower recently called on Multipipe and National Power Services to install 12 140 mm conduit pipes and associated electricity cables that will carry electricity to major industrial centres in and around the Melbourne CBD.

SADB: on time and on budget

SADB Directional Drilling (SADB) provides underground service installations to a range of government and private sector clients, covering all areas of communication, electricity, water, gas and soil remediation. Two recent successful projects have been the Basslink Interconnector for Pirelli and the SA Water Sewer Project for Stirling South Australia.

Harker Construction rise to the challenge of Wellington contract

Harker Underground Construction was established in 1986 with a focus on pipe jacking, after an initial focus on general contracting work. From the outset the company used hand techniques to install short lines, typically under railways and main roads, although in 1998 Harker began to use mechanical means to install lines. Harker provided Trenchless Australasia with this update on their operations, focusing on a recent contract they were awarded from the Wellington City Council in New Zealand.

Orica groundwater remediation project

As a result of a number of spills in the 1960s, contamination has leached through the predominantly sandy ground of a number of sites owned by Orica in Botany Bay, reaching the water table up to 20 m below the surface. As a result of tidal and ground water movement, a plume is making its way toward the open water of Botany Bay. To clean up and stop the plume reaching Botany Bay, Orica called on UEA.

Priority Sewerage Program established at Belimba Park

Over the last few years, Sydney Water has been concentrating and acting on a long term strategy for sustainable wastewater management throughout Sydney, Illawara and the Blue Mountains. A Priority Sewerage Program (PSP) has been established in the Belimbla Park area which will connect the local residents to a low pressure sewerage system.

Underground Services take delivery of new Grundodrill

TT Asia Pacific has supplied a new Grundodrill 13X Directional Drill to Perth-based Underground Services Australia. This is the first machine of this style Underground Services has ordered, after many months were spent researching the Australian and overseas market for a suitable directional drill rig package to supplement the existing fleet of machines.

Drilling needs covered by HMI

Established in 1999, Hard Metal Industries was originally based in Perth, but moved to Brisbane in 2002 to provide a better service to customers on the East Coast.
