Abigroup Contractors and Apache Services have formed a joint venture to deliver Tasmania’s telecommunications infrastructure, as part of the National Broadband Network, to install a fibre optic cable between Bellerive and Howrah in Hobart, using a combination of trenching and horizontal directional drilling (HDD).

This project was a major challenge for Infrastructure Constructions due to the location, ground conditions (rock) and interaction required between all the current construction companies working in the area.

Chorus, Telecom New Zealand’s network access business, has appointed Visionstream to manage the field technicians that install or repair network and telecommunications services throughout the Auckland and Northland regions. The company says it is likely to continue to make good use of trenchless technologies and any advances in those technologies, in particular horizontal directional drilling, in carrying out this work.
