Jobs gain momentum in Sydney

New South Wales Water Minister Phil Costa has said that the signing of the $A900 million contract between Sydney Water and the Momentum consortium, to maintain and renew Sydney’s water network, will sustain 300 jobs a year for at least the next four years, with an optional extension until 2016.

Underground Services take delivery of new Grundodrill

TT Asia Pacific has supplied a new Grundodrill 13X Directional Drill to Perth-based Underground Services Australia. This is the first machine of this style Underground Services has ordered, after many months were spent researching the Australian and overseas market for a suitable directional drill rig package to supplement the existing fleet of machines.

New Grundotugger works through tight Canberra soils

In July this year, Joel Royal of Drain King in Canberra took delivery of the new Tracto-Technik Grundotugger. This lateral pipe burster uses simple hydraulics and cable to burst old brittle pipe systems and pulls in new PE pipe of 110 or 160 mm over lengths of up to 50 metres in situ.

Ipswich Water, west of Brisbane, like most local councils, have hundreds of kilometres of water mains in their water distribution network. These mains do not last forever and will require rehabilitation eventually. After many years of service this 225mm cast iron main had some repairs which were becoming more and more frequent due to a combination of the black soil movement in the area and corrosion of the cast iron material.

Tracto-Technik’s Grundoburst 1250G in China

In May 2006, Beijing company Chuanganya Trenchless Technology upgraded to the new Grundoburst 1250G (125 tonne) pipe bursting system from their previous Grundoburst 800G (80 tonne) unit. As larger diameter pipes would require the performance of a more powerful system, the upgrade would give the company a greater range to add to their capabilities.

South East Queensland Underroad Drillers (SEQUD) was approached by Mike Gurney of Gurney Earthmoving, a contractor working for Delfin-property developers of Springfield, to determine if it was possible to drill out a collapsed 225 mm PVC storm water pipe and replace it with a new 250 mm polyethylene main.

In July 2005, Fergus Doyle (CLM Excavations Managing Director), Trevor Groeneveld (former owner of No Dig Pipelaying and Manager of Collex Pipeline Services) and Phill Cook (CLM Excavations General Manager) completed the acquisition of the Collex Pipeline Services division, with the exception of the CIPP sewer lining business which Collex continues to operate.

In the midst of a $US53 million addition to the Mechanical Engineering building on the Purdue University campus, it was discovered that a 15 foot deep, 12 inch clay sewer lateral that serviced the building had a collapsed section of pipe.

The Sydney Water Main Replacement Program commenced last year when Collex purchased their first GrundoBurst 400G machine, which has been achieving daily averages of 200 to 240 metres, with these results and the demonstrated reliability of the unit, a further Grundoburst 400G machine was purchased and added to the Collex equipment fleet.
