In Victoria, Australia’s second longest pipe jack tunnel was completed on the Sugarloaf Pipeline Project and a 3 m diameter tunnel boring machine was launched as part of the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement Project.

The industry has experienced a shifting emphasis on certain project types in recent years. Firstly it was road tunnels, then tunnels for desalination plants. Now the emphasis seems to be on underground metros. Whatever the emphasis, the increasing needs of our population – particularly in urban environments – has meant that the Australasian tunnelling industry has kept busy through the recession and is set to surge ahead in the years to come.
