For over a decade, equipment designer and director Gordon Stark has received requests for the design and manufacture of specialised equipment to overcome operational issues and inefficiencies. In response to this ongoing demand, Starky Constructions was born.
From these beginnings Starky Constructions has developed a range of products that which are now supplied to the wider underground services industry. Products are designed to enhance the usage of equipment such as high pressure jetting equipment, surveillance equipment, cameras, cutters, jet vacuums and a large range of other equipment.
Mr Stark says that one of the company’s most popular pieces with equipment is the hose runner. The hose runner transforms sharp corners into smooth, low-resistance curves – eliminating abrasion. The self-cleaning machined rollers provide a low-resistance path for all hose sizes.
Shane Ingram from JETCAM says “As a jet and CCTV operator of 15 years experience, since I started using the hose runner it has become an essential tool for me in drain cleaning and inspection. It is a much better hose protection that the sock type tubes I previously used. It makes my job easier and the hose lasts much longer.”

Mr Ingram will often use two hose runners at once, particularly when the work vehicle is several metres away from the maintenance hole (MH), or where there are sharp angles as the jet hose goes over the edge of the MH and the pipe is being cleaned. The rollers in the hose runner reduce the friction on corners and tight bends tremendously says Mr Ingram.
“It is now just as easy to retrieve hose from long distances as if you were working directly over the MH.
“I have found it does not slip out of the pipe like the old socks when retrieving hose, and when positioned correctly it will perform perfectly every time. I also use the hose runner for protecting the coaxial cable of the CCTV system that I utilise in the same jet truck.”
Mr Ingram says it is definitely a worthwhile investment to protect high pressure drain cleaning hose, “I would recommend it to every hydrojet operator.”
Starky Constructions continues to develop new products in demand from its client base. In addition, the company specifically designs and manufactures products that overcome client issues.
