The century-old main is in poor condition and can no longer keep up with demand in Melbourne’s inner north.
The tender for the multi-million dollar project will be released in the coming months with works expected to start in late 2013.
Melbourne Water Project Spokesperson Phil Corluka said community involvement in the three year project would be vital.
“We’re asking people with a good understanding of the local area to join the community reference group and provide valuable input during the planning and construction of the new main,” said Mr Corluka.
