The simplicity of assembly and operation was the main feature that Joel appreciated as well as the fact that new pipe systems can be installed without the need to cut, remove, dig out old pipe, install new pipe, re-compact backfill and reinstate surfaces, which never quite look the same as they did originally.

For training purposes, Joel chose two projects on which to test the capabilities of the machine. The first job involved installing 15 metres of 110 mm PE pipe next to a swimming pool, under a concrete garage and out into the front garden of a residence. The Grundotugger did this effortlessly and with no disturbance to the pool or in the garage area.

The next project was replacing an old 4 inch sewer running right across the front of a high set home in Mugga Way, Canberra under the front concrete entrance and stepping down 600 mm to the triple width concrete driveway area. Tree roots were the biggest ongoing problem in this area and the installation of the new fully welded 110 mm PE pipe will ensure no more problems in the future with this new system.

Peter Decker of TT Asia Pacific helped set Joel up with the correct installation on his excavator and advised on the safe and correct operation of the Grundotugger and accessories. Masses of tree roots near the entry point right at the jump-up made for an initial challenge in excavating to prepare for the cable, bursthead and pipe to start from.

The exit pit where the Grundotugger was installed was in the middle of the garden, only requiring a small excavation for the machine to fit in. The Grundotugger’s control box was connected to Joel’s excavator for the hydraulic drive and half an hour later the 20 m of new 110 mm PE pipe was installed. The Grundotugger can be easily dismantled into components - the heaviest of which weighs no more than 32 kg – and then wheel-barrowed or carried to difficult to access areas, reassembled, and operated to complete the job then disassembled again. Also, a simple manhole version is available if the project requires this style of set up.

The old method of dig and replace for lateral pipes and mains was labour intensive, disruptive, usually expensive and needed to be completed in a smarter, more efficient manner. The Grundotugger has introduced 21st century technology and mind set, well within the reach and budget of most lateral pipe replacement/refurbishment groups. Joel is now very busy with some major projects as a direct result of owning this unique piece of equipment.
