As part of South East Water’s infrastructure renewal program, the project will use horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to drill under tram tracks and roads.
The Chapel Street water main was constructed in 1862 and extended in the 1940s. Independent investigation has indicated that this pipe is nearing the end of its functional life and needs to be replaced. The water main which extends along the eastern side of Chapel Street will be partially replaced, along with shorter sections of the reticulation mains along the western side of the street.
The sections of reticulation main to be replaced include:
- Cintra Avenue to Dandenong Road
- Green Street to High Street
- Commercial Road
- Cliff Street to Arthur Street
- 531 Chapel Street to Toorak Road.
Works are being conducted in temporary zones of approximately 60 m at a time and 650 m of renewal pipe has been laid to date.
