Contractor John Holland is expected to begin construction on the 19 kilometre water pipeline, which will run from the Mardi Dam to Bungaree Creek Dam, within a few weeks of the schedule’s release.

The pipeline will include a two kilometre link from the Wyong River to the Mardi Dam, as well as two new pump stations and associated works. The scope of the project also includes microtunnelling under the Wyong River.

The Australian Government has provided $A80.3 million for the project through the Water Smart Australia Program with the remaining $A40 million to be jointly funded by the Gosford and Wyong councils.

A spokesperson for the Wyong City Council said that the councils were appreciative of the government funding as the project is very important to them.

“For us, the project wasn’t about innovation, it’s about securing supply to 2050. The project was about the best solution to a very serious problem. It wasn’t about being innovative – it is a clever project, linking dams in two council areas,” the Wyong Council spokesperson said.

The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2011.
