The work will involve laying a new 180 mm pressurised wastewater main from the southern end of George Street, along Kakahoroa Drive to the existing wastewater pump station at the northern end of McAlister Street.
Whakatane District Council Manager Utilities Santha Agas said “The majority of the new 930 m pipe will be installed using trenchless methods. That will avoid the need for lengthy trenches, meaning minimal disturbance to traffic and residents.”
The new pipeline will address overflows that have occurred as a result of stormwater entering the wastewater system during severe wet weather events in the area.
The new pressurised pipe work provides a dedicated line for all upper catchment flows from the Hillcrest/Mokorua area to the McAlister Street pump station.
